DescriptionTwo ironclad gun boats are in the river opposite a large fort. American flags fly from each vessel. Smoke issues from their smokestacks. Cannons fire from their gunports. Both are similar steamboats with side paddlewheels. Artillery shells explode in the water and on the earthworks of the fort. A Confederate flag on the fort is partially obscured by cannon smoke. A vine hangs from a leafless tree in the left foreground. Evergreen trees and stumps are on the shore.
