DescriptionSoldiers in uniform fire cannons at a stone fort on an island in the distance. A flag with a palmetto tree on it flies at the far right. Two men carry off a wounded comrade. Two other soldiers collapse near the nearest gun. Cannon balls and sandbags are piled in the foreground. An American flag flies from the fort in the harbor, largely obscured by cannon smoke. White lines show the trajectories of cannonballs, and white puffs of smoke show where shells are exploding in the air. The city of Charleston is barely visible on the horizon in the distance. A floating battery is in the right background.
