DescriptionA shell bursts directly above the head of a man on horseback, who falls backward, holding his sword above his head. A second man on horseback, directly behind him, places his hand on his shoulder. Two other men in military uniform are on horses nearby. A gun crew at the left fires a cannon. At the right, ranks of men wearing red shirts, blue trousers, and hats and carrying knapsacks and canteens, advance towards the left holding rifles with fixed bayonets. An American flag flies overhead. Additional cannon crews are in the background. In the left background, Confederate troops advance towards the right. A man and a horse lie on the ground, apparently dead or wounded.
