Covered wagons drawn by mules are in the street below. On the paved sidewalk in the foreground, two men turn to look at a woman who is accompanied by two soldiers in uniform. An African-American man is leaning on a lamp post at the right. Facing him, an African-American woman wearing an apron over her dress carries a large basket on her head. Soldiers with an American flag march in the background. Other soldiers are on horseback. At the left, a small military band with horns and drums is led by a mounted officer. A flagpole, trees, and the steeples of two churches are in the left background.
