DescriptionAn artillery shell explodes between two men on horseback. The man and horse at the right have fallen to the ground, dead or wounded. The man at the left falls backwards off his rearing horse, clutching his chest with his left hand. He holds a sword in his right hand. Both the man and his horse are bleeding from numerous wounds. Other men lie on the ground nearby. At the left, a gun crew fires a cannon. All of the men wear military uniforms. Some have beards or mustaches. At the right, Union troops carrying rifles with fixed bayonets and knapsacks, advance down a hill into dense cannon smoke. One man carries an American flag. Additional troops, flags, and cavalry are in the background. The spires of a town and hills are visible in the distance.
