DescriptionMen wearing Union army uniforms fire cannons from the left foreground towards a large group of Confederate soldiers retreating in the right background. An officer on horseback watches through a telescope. He wears a hat with a plume. In the right foreground, a shell bursts, and men and a horse fall dead or wounded. A sword, a rifle with fixed bayonet, and a cap are on the ground. Additional Union troops advance behind them beneath an American flag. Much of the field is obscurred by cannon smoke. In the midst of the smoke, men fire from beneath a tree. Additional cannon crews and infantry are in the left background. Two warships are on a body of water, presumably the Mississippi River, in the distance.
