DescriptionMan's double-breasted, cutaway tail coat of deep blue wool broadcloth. The front closure has five pewter buttons and handmade buttonholes on each side. The high, deep, notched collar is an "M" shape between each peak. The turned-back collar is 3 3/4 inches wide at the center back. The cutaways extend 9 1/4 inches from the front edges, angling slightly down to be 1 3/4 inch away from the horizontal waist seam. The coat is constructed with a center back and curved side-back seams. The shoulder seams angle down over the back from the collar to the armscye. There is a pewter button at the intersection of each side-back and waist seam. False pockets flaps, 7 3/4 inches long and 1 7/8 inches wide, angle down slightly across the top of each tail. Two pleats extend down each tail from the back buttons, with a button sewn into the bottom of the pleats two inches from the tail coat's hem. There are no pockets under the pleats. Each tail has a slash pocket located under the tail, made from two cotton fabrics. The two-piece sleeves are slightly curved and slightly gathered at the shoulders. Cuffs are plainly made, 2 1/2 inches wide with a slit at the back seam extending 4 1/4 inches above the sleeve bottom. Each cuff has two small, copper, ornamental buttons; one is located on the cuff and one is 1/2 inch above. The upper button on the proper right is missing. The shoulders and upper torso are slightly padded, with heavy red wool fabric and buckram visible under the facing. The coat is not fully lined but is self-faced along the front, lapels, and collar. Two cotton fabrics (one woven stripe, one plain white) are used to line the sleeves. These same fabrics are used in the tail poackets.
