DescriptionWoman's bonnet of small black and white checked, silk fabric. The narrow brim (2 1/2 inches wide at the center top) angles away from the forehead and is covered with two rows of black guimpe (a decorative tape). It is lined with black silk; a ruffle of white silk is attached only at the ends with a pin in the center, so it may not be original. The ends of the brim extend three inches below the bottom of the curtain (or "bavolet"), ending in a point on which a tie of black silk moire, 1 5/8 inches wide and 25 inches long, is stitched. The ends of the ties are cut at a diagonal. The proper left side of the bonnet is decorated with a bow of checked silk edged with black lace.
The crown is made of four strips of checked silk shirred over a lining of stiffened, brown cotton. Narrow, black lace is sewn along the seam between the crown and brim and along each seam attaching the four pieces. The bottom of the crown is stiffened with wire, which is also used to edge the brim and bottom of the curtain. The curtain is 1 1/2 inches-wide, gathered at the top and bottom, stiffened with white starched fabric, and attached to the base of the crown. The edge of the bonnet is bound with checked silk all around. There is an additional strip of black silk lining the sides of the crown.
