DescriptionMan's hand-stitched coat of natural-colored linen. The single-breasted closure, thirty inches to the top hole, has three self-covered buttons. The buttons are spaced seven inches apart with hand-stitched buttonholes on the proper left side. The small notched lapel has a narrow collar, 2 1/8 inches wide. The side seams sit to the side back and not directly under the arms. There is a center back seam. The one-piece sleeves are seamed at the back of the arm and finished at the wrists with a simple facing. All the seams of this unlined coat are self-enclosed, the stitching of the seam allowance appearing as top stitching on the outside. There are two large pockets set one over each hip in the front. These pockets are made by applying a patch pocket to the inside of the coat and slashing through the outer fabric. The opening is then faced with linen. A third, smaller pocket is sewn in the same way to the proper left breast. All three pockets have rounded bottom corners. There are front facings on each side front to finish the edges, and the bottom of the coat has a scant 1/4 inch hem. There was a great deal of vegetable matter in the lower pockets: snippets of stems, seeds, etc. This material has been saved in the file for reference.
