DescriptionWoman's bonnet of black straw or grass braid, 1/4 inch wide, with wide silk ribbon trim. The brim, approximately 4 1/2 inches wide at the center top, flares out away from the face. The bottom corners of the brim are pointed and lower than the line of the back of the neck. The join between the deep brim and crown is decorated with a 2 3/8-inch-wide black silk ribbon draped and folded over the top of the bonnet. The edge of the brim is shaped with wire, which continues around the back of the brim. The crown is about four inches deep and five inches in diameter at the back. A curtain of black silk, lined with brown lace, is pleated in the center, and stitched right-sides-together along the base of the crown and down to the inside of the brim points. The inside of the brim is lined with a very light black silk for 3 1/2 inches, with the side of the crown lined in a loosely woven black fabric. The proper left side has a double tie with a three-inch-wide, black silk ribbon and a narrower (7/8-inch-wide) ribbon folded and stitched to the proper right front point. The proper right side currently has a black twill tape stitched to the point; this is probably not original.
