DescriptionWoman's bonnet made of finely plied straw or grass. The bonnet appears to be constructed of woven bands of straw, approximately two inches wide, into which have been woven undulating designs. The bands have been stitched together and shaped to form a crown and a long brim that extends beyond the face. The angle between the crown and brim is flat. The brim is delineated by a deep, peach-colored silk ribbon, six inches wide, that is set back approximately one inch from the edge. The ribbon is draped around the brim, with a rosette stitched on each side of the face. The ribbon becomes the ties for the bonnet, measuring approximately eighteen inches long. It is folded and stitched to the bottom corners of the brim. The bottom corners here are very pointed and have been folded to the underside in a later alteration. The inside of the brim is lined with a wide silk ribbon, 5 1/2 inches wide, colored with an ombre effect of peach along the edge fading to a cream color, and then to light blue green. A long sprig of faux flowers, in shades of pinks, peach, and green, decorates the proper left side upper and center of the inside brim. The crown is shaped by gathering the longer edge of the last strip of weaving, the hole being covered with a rosette of decorative straw work. A curtain (or "bavolet"), 2 1/2 inches wide and made from a yellow silk ribbon, is gathered across the top and stitched along the bottom edge. A narrow ruffle, of the same fabric and only 1/2 inch wide, runs along the bottom edge. Covered wire is stitched to the edge of the bonnet above the curtain as well as around the brim.
