DescriptionFolk Art landscape view of the Town Farms, Asylum for Insane and the Connecticut River in Middletown, Connecticut. 1870-1890.

This c. 1870-1890 landscape, done in colored pencil, gouache and ink on paper provides a detailed visual depiction of this important river town.

From the south, looking north towards the town center, the landscape features the buildings and fields of the Town Farms, and off in the distance the imposing brick buildings of the new General Hospital for Insane of the State of Connecticut (today the Connecticut Valley Hospital). In addition to the built environment, the piece also shows the natural landscape, as the Connecticut River features prominently and is dotted with several vessels including a large double stack, side-wheeler steamship.

This scene, just south of Middletown, depicts the activities that took place at the Middletown Town Farms. It shows people working in the field and others walking in single file. In the background are the Connecticut Valley Hospital (then known as the Connecticut Hospital for the Insane) that had just opened in 1868, and the city center of Middletown.

Different modes of transportation are documented along the Connecticut River including the railroad and a variety of vessels, including a steamer that is likely the City of Hartford.
