DescriptionThe Holy Family rests beneath a large tree. The Virgin Mary, a young woman wearing a high-waisted dress, a turban, and sandals, is seen in profile. A halo floats above her head. She holds the Christ Child, a naked sleeping infant resting on a sheet, in her lap. Her left foot rests on a stone. With her right hand, she opens a lantern that hangs from a branch of the tree, so that the light falls on the sleeping baby. Saint Joseph, an elderly bearded man, sits on the ground at the right, apparently asleep, with his head resting on his folded arms. He wears robes and perhaps a cloak. Ferns and grass are in the left foreground. It appears to be night. The light breaking through the clouds in the sky is probably moonlight.

NotesSource Note: The pictorial source was apparently a Renaissance painting, presumably known through an engraved reproduction. (Finlay 4/21/2003)
