DescriptionWoman's spoon bonnet of brown silk with black machine-made lace and brown ribbon trims. The bonnet crown sits close to the head, with three rows of silk gathered over wire on each side. The center of the crown has a double row of the same gathering, with a ruffle extending 3/4 of an inch from each side. The bottom edge of the crown, around the the back of the neck, is covered with the brown silk gathered over wire to a depth of 1 1/2 inches; the silk extends above the wire to form a narrow ruffle. The brim of the bonnet is 2 5/8 inches at its widest point, where it flares above the forehead. The brim is also covered with the brown silk, which is gathered over wire. The brim extends in long points on either side, 3 7/8 inches beyond the bottom of the crown. Brown silk ribbon is pleated along these extensions, becoming the bonnet ties. Brown silk ribbon is also used for a double bow at the back of the neck and on the proper right side of the brim. Black machine-made lace is stitched along the bottom of the crown and is used as decoration within the silk ribbon bows. A double bow of blue silk ribbon is stitched to the underside of the brim just left of the center. The bonnet is lined with buckram and the edges are faced with dark brown, loosely woven cotton.
