DescriptionCongressional Medal of Honor awarded to George W. Corliss on 10 September 1897, for his gallantry at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Virginia (9 August 1862). The medal is in the shape of a five-pointed star with an eagle above the star. The engraving on the front is of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and war, holding a shield, while a man holding snakes recoils from her. The fabric is red, white, and blue stripes. The back of medal is engraved with the name of the recipient and the battle the medal is awarded for.

George W. Corliss was Captain of Company C in the CT 5th Regiment Infantry. He enlisted on 21 June 1861. He was wounded and captured on 9 August 1862 at Cedar Mountain, Virginia.
