DescriptionA large crowd of men and women surrounds a large stone building with central and corner pavillions, mansard roofs, tall chimneys, dormers, and arched windows and entrances. A man in dark clothing stands above the crowd, his right arm outstretched. The time is 11:30, according to a clock in the building above his head. An iron fence is at the right. Several French flags appear above the heads of the crowd. Men in uniform, many raising rifles or muskets with fixed bayonets, are in the foreground.
Label TextThe poet Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869) served briefly as the head of the French government, following the February Revolution of 1848. This Kellogg lithograph was almost certainly executed between March and June of that year and was probably based on a contemporary wood-engraved magazine illustration. It reflects an unusual interest in contemporary European politics on the part of the Hartford lithographers. (For Lamartine, see accession number 1950.112.0)
NotesSource Note: The style suggests that the visual source may be a wood-engraved illustration from a contemporary illustrated magazine. (Finlay 12/26/2002)

Subject Note: After the February Revolution of 1848, Alphonse de Lamartine briefly served as head of the provisional government of France, which replaced the deposed monarch Louis Philippe. (Finlay 12/26/2002)
