DescriptionA house with louvered shutters, a porch, an oval window in its gable, and a square Italianate tower is at the left, surrounded by grassy lawns edged with plants or bushes, a picket fence with a gate, and large trees. A woman and small child stand beneath the tower. A second building is at the fair right. A paved sidewalk appears to line the dirt road. A woman wearing an apron stands in the road near the gate, apparently buying something from a man who stands behind a horse-drawn wagon, possibly a peddler's cart. A horse-drawn carriage is in the road at the right, and a covered wagon is in the distance. A man on horseback is near a second woman on the sidewalk. Rail fences line fields on the right. In the first field, a man uses a rake to pitch hay onto a haystack. In the second field, a man pumps water into a trough for two horses, and horses draw a haywagon past a small farm building. A small town and additional buildings are on the banks of a large river or lake, possibly the Hudson River, in the background. A train runs along the bank at the far right, and a steamboat and a sailing vessel are in the water. Hills are in the background.
