DescriptionFour cows are standing in the water at the edge of a stream or pond. A grassy bank slopes up in the background towards a group of buildings, including a house or barn, a church steeple, and an arched stone gateway. A board fence is at the left. A man, apparently the cowherd, stands on the bank, wearing a smock, trousers, and a broad-brimmed hat. He has a staff or goad in one hand and a whip in the other. A dog stands beside him. Large trees, probably willows, grow beside the water.
