DescriptionA family group is posed in the interior of a room, probably a parlor. The woman is seated in an upholstered chair at the left. She wears a dress and a plaid tie, and she has a ribbon in her hair. Her foot rests on a cushion or footstool. She holds an infant wrapped in a quilt or blanket in her lap. The baby reaches toward a doll held by a young girl wearing a dress with a wide collar or bertha. The man is seated at the right on a sofa trimmed with braid. He wears a coat, vest, shirt, tie, and trousers. His right hand rests on the head of a young boy wearing a short dress with a belt over pantaloons. The child holds a ball or a piece of fruit in his right hand. A patterned carpet is on the floor. Patterned wallpaper is on the wall. An oil painting in a gilt frame depicting a man with a staff in a landscape hangs at the upper right. Drapery with tassels frames the left side of the window; plain drapery frames the right side.
