DescriptionA family group is posed in the interior of a room, probably a parlor. A woman and a man are seated on an upholstered sofa. She wears a lowcut dress and has a ribbon and a wreath of flowers in her hair. She holds an infant wearing a cap and gown, wrapped in a quilt or blanket in her lap. At the left, a young girl sits on a footstool trimmed with braid. She holds an open picture book in her lap, and her feet rest on a cushion with tassels at the corners. The man wears a coat, vest, shirt, tie, and trousers. He has a beard. A young child, probably a boy, wearing a short dress, stands beside him on the sofa. A patterned carpet is on the floor. An oil painting in a gilt frame depicting a country house in a landscape hangs at the upper right. Drapery is in the left background.
