DescriptionCoat (.a): Man's frock coat of black, fine wool with a black lining of cotton and silk in a fine diagonal ribweave. The double-breasted front closure has four pairs of buttons and five pairs of buttonholes, although the bottom two were the only ones used. The buttons are metal discs covered with a satin fabric. The lapels are notched and peaked. The sleeves are constructed from shaped upper and lower pieces, with plain hems. They are lined with a white silk fabric. The side front pieces each have one dart for fit. The coat torso is very lightly padded for shaping. The coat is constructed with side seams, and a curved side back seam on each side of the center back seam. The shoulder seams angle down from the collar to each armscye below the top of the shoulders. There is a button, identical to those on the front, where the side back seams meet the waistline seam and pleats of each tail. Pockets are located inside at each breast and in each tail. A strip of wool twill tape is stitched inside the back of the neck for hanging the coat.
Man's vest (.b) of black superfine wool, with a narrow shawl collar that is very narrow at the back of the neck. There is a breast pocket and a waist pocket on each side. The center front opening fastens with four self-covered disk-shaped buttons. The back of the vest is made of black cotton sateen. The center back seam is notched at the waist. The fit of the vest is adjusted by a buckled strap across the back. The lining is white, glazed, twill-woven cotton. There is one pocket in the lining at the proper left breast. The side seams are vented for 1 1/2 inches.
