DescriptionProfessional studio portraits and amateur snapshots of the family and friends of Arthur J. Gilman of Hartford. Included are many portraits of Albert J. Gilman, his wife, Bertha Petersen Gilman, and their son, Martin A. Gilman, as well as Mrs. Gilman's sisters and mother, Salome Petersen. Also included are photographs of the houses on Gray Street and at 58 Sisson Avenue where the Gilmans lived in the 1910s and 1920s, photographs of their Christmas tree, taken in 1912, and many photographs of Martin A. Gilman as a child. Two class photographs, taken at the New Park Avenue School in 1921 and 1922, include Martin A. Gilman and other school children. A 1915 Ford runabout automobile is shown, both in its original condition and after being rebuilt with a touring body. Another group of photographs show the Gilman family at the beach, posing on the porch of a cottage, swimming, and playing on a raft.

Subject Note: Albert James Gilman was born 2 September 1876. He married Bertha Petersen. They had a son, Martin A. Gilman, the donor. Albert James Gilman was employed by the Southern New England Telephone Company in Hartford from 9 May 1910 until his retirement on 1 May 1936. (Martin A. Gilman 11/3/2002)
