DescriptionMan's vest of cream-colored silk brocade woven with a design of floral sprays. The vest has a shawl collar and slightly dipped lower front edge. Seven self-covered buttons close the center front. The collar edges, continuing down the center front and bottom edges, are finished with a fine silk cord. There is a slanted pocket at the left breast and two five-inch-wide pockets above the waist. The bottom edges of the front panels are each lined with a strip of white kid leather. The backing and lining fabric is plain, undyed cotton. The fit is adjusted by means of a fabric strap and buckle across the back.
NotesHistorical Note: According to museum records, this vest may have been worn by Mr. Saxton at the wedding of Marianne Hopkins and Edward Hopkins. Mr. Saxton was probably Nathaniel Saxton, the father of Harriet E. Saxton, who is connected to other items in this same accession lot.Status
