DescriptionPhotograph of George R. Curtis' house on North Broad Street in Meriden, Connecticut. Two story house with one chimney, stone foundation and wood siding. Covered entry porch. Bay window on right side of porch. Second floor bay window encompasses entire height of floor. Decorated dormer on right side of house. Second level has an enclosed porch in the rear.

“George Redfield Curtis taught school in Meriden during 1848. In 1849, he became bookkeeper for Julius Pratt & Co. and stayed there until 1850, when he became a teller at the Meriden Bank. In 1853, he began to work to at the Meriden Britannia Company, where he was elected treasurer, a position he held until his death.

He was president of the Meriden Silver Plate Company, Meriden Horse Railroad Company, and Meriden Gas Light Company. He was a director in the Wilcox Silver Plate Company, Chapman Manufacturing Company, Manning, Bowman & Company, Home National Bank, Meriden Trust & Safe Deposit Company, R. Wallace & Sons Manufacturing Company of Wallingford, Rogers & Brother of Waterbury, and William Rogers Manufacturing Company of Hartford. He was a trustee of the Meriden Savings Bank and the Curtis Home for Orphans and Old Ladies. He served as a councilman and alderman, and mayor of Meriden for two terms from 1879-1881.”
