DescriptionTwo elderly women are seated on the steps leading to the porch of large frame house. A third woman stands on a paved walk nearby. All three women wear skirts and blouses. One holds an open umbrella, which she is apparently using as a parasol. The house has a high brick foundation, louvered shutters, and trim painted in contrasting colors. Vines grow on the porches at the left and right and on a trellis at the right. Flower beds at the left appear to be planted with annuals. Rose bushes and shrubs are at the right. A large fern is in a pot on the grassy lawn in the foreground. Iron garden furniture is at the left. There appear to be additional formal gardens in the left background.
NotesSubject Note: According to the Hartford City Directory, Mary L. Atwood, the widow of George W. Atwood, was residing at 78 Whitney Street in 1906. Lucinda Atwood does not appear to be listed. (Finlay 12/29/2003)
