DescriptionA young man is seated in an ornately carved and upholstered chair, trimmed with fringe. An American eagle and a shield are among the carved decorations. He wears a coat, vest, necktie, shirt, trousers, and slippers. He holds a print, apparently a Kellogg lithograph, depicting a family consisting of a husband, wife, and two children. The inscribed title reads: "MARRIED." He has a beard. His boots lie beneath the chair on a patterned carpet or floorcloth. A coal fire burns in a grate in the fireplace at the right. A pendulum clock beneath a glass dome and two books are on the mantle. A coal bucket, a poker and tongs, a broken clay pipe, and a small box inscribed "ANDERSON / NEW YORK" are near the hearth. Two additional books and a small lamp, possibly an oil or argon lamp, are on a table covered with a tablecloth. Drapery surrounds a window in the left background. A framed oil painting of a landscape hangs on the wall.
