DescriptionA man, a woman, and a small child, probably a girl, are seated at a round table covered with a tablecloth. The woman holds an infant wrapped in a plaid blanket in her lap. The man reads from a large book, presumably a Bible. He wears a coat, vest, shirt, stock, necktie, trousers, and shoes. He has a beard. She wears a dress, an apron, and a shawl. Her feet rest on an upholstered footstool. Both adults are seated in large armchairs upholstered in what appears to be red velvet, decorated with fringe. The child is seated in a smaller chair. The table is set for breakfast with a teapot, cups and saucers, plates or shallow bowls, eggs in eggcups, and silverware. A patterned carpet or floorcloth is on the floor. In the fireplace, a coal fire burns in the grate. Steam issues from the spout of a tea kettle. Tongs hang nearby. A brass fender rests on the hearth rug. A clock and an urn, possibly a knife box, are on the mantle. Framed pictures, probably lithographs, hang on the wall. The picture on the left depicts a bluebird perched on a rose holding a card that reads: "True / to thee". The picture on the right appears to depict Jesus Christ preaching to the children. Books in bookcases line the wall. A window with fringed drapes is at the far right. The flowers on the window sill are not part of the original design, but are on a printed sticker that has been affixed to the surface of the print.
