DescriptionA man wearing a checked shirt, a broad-brimmed hat, an apron, and trousers stands on the seashore beside two baskets of fish. Additional fish, skates, and lobsters are on the ground nearby. The man holds a lobster in his left hand and appears to be showing it to a woman at the right. She wears a dress with eyelet trim on the collar and a bonnet trimmed with ribbons and a flower. A handkerchief covers her left hand. A small child, probably a girl, wearing a short dress and straw hat, pats the lobster on the tail. A small boy at the left is seated on the ground and plays with one of the fish. A woman, probably the fisherman's wife, stands behind him holding a small child. At the far left, a girl wearing a short dress, an apron with a pocket, and a necklace, balances a basket of fish on her head. The fisherman's boat is in the water immediately behind him. Two other small sailing vessels are in the left and right background. Steep bluffs or cliffs are in the right background; the open ocean appears to be in the left background.
