DescriptionA young woman, seen in profile, sits in an upholstered armchair. She kisses the cheek of a young man who leans down to kiss a young girl on the forehead. Two younger children lean against the woman's lap. One of them kisses the other on the cheek. The woman wears a dress or dressing gown with a lace collar and a scarf. A fringed shawl is draped over the back of her chair. All of the children appear to wear skirts. Two appear to wear collars trimmed with ruffles. The man wears a coat and trousers. A vase of flowers, probably roses, is on a table or console at the left. There appears to be a paneled door in the right background.

NotesSource Note: The style, composition, and subject matter of The Happy Family are all typical of Louis Léopold Boilly (1761-1845); a print by or after Boilly is almost certainly the source. (Finlay 10/16/2002)On View
