DescriptionA young man and a young woman play blind man's bluff. The woman has a handkerchief or scarf tied across her eyes as a blindfold and stands with outstretched arms. She wears a straw hat and a blouse. Her skirt is tucked up, revealing her shift or petticoat. A floral corsage is pinned to her bodice. There are bows on her neck and shoes. The young man, who is behind her, wears a jacket over a shirt. His lower body is not visible. Two young children, possibly cupids or putti, are on the ground at the left. One child appears to stab the woman in the right hand with an arrow or whip. A tin basin, a ceramic jug, a stone wall, a rope, and a board fence are in the foreground. Flowers, trees, and a building, apparently a cottage with a thatched roof, are in the background.

NotesSource Note: The composition is closely copied from a painting with the same title by the French rococo painter Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806). The direct visual source was probably an engraving. (Finlay 10/9/2002)
