DescriptionPhotographs mostly taken during the World War II era. Most include William H. Mortensen at fundraising events and patriotic rallies, for example: a bond rally with men and women in military uniforms, most apparently Marines; on a stage, with men speaking at a podium with a microphone; buying tickets at a box office window with a poster nearby reading, "Leave contributions here for Navy Relief"; looking at a large broadside advertising the Broadway play "No Time for Sergeants" coming soon to the Bushnell Memorial; standing with uniformed policemen at a bond rally at the Bushnell; as State Senator-elect standing on an outside platform for the opening radio program of Women at War Week on 23 November 1942, with Mrs. Armstrong, and Mayor Thomas J. Spellacy. One photograph shows the visit of Admiral Thomas Hart that includes a trip to Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Aircraft with Lieutenant Commander C. E. Smith, Lieutenant Commander R. W. Oliver, and Horace M. Horner, Vice President United Aircraft Corporation and general manager of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. They are seen in a factory looking at machinery, in an office, and at a dinner at the Hartford Club on 26 May 1942 in honor of the admiral. Guests include the admiral's wife, Caroline Brownson Hart; Alice Mortensen; Barnard Whelan, Vice-President of United Aircraft, and his wife Blanche; Colonel George A. Wardinski, Quartermaster general of the State of Connecticut, and his wife Elizabeth; Rear Admiral F. A. Daubin and his wife; Mayor Spellacy and his wife, Elizabeth; Dr. William Lyon Phelps of Yale; Alice Tranberry, a Hartford Public High School teacher; General Reginald (Rex) B. DeLacour, adjutant general and Chief of Staff of State of Connecticut; and past Hartford Mayor Walter Batterson.
Other subjects include: an elevated view of a dinner on a stage with several tables and decorations with American flags and banners in the background; a dedication ceremony with men in uniform and women seated on a platform; some of the same women standing on a grassy lawn looking at a large object covered with a tarp, with several older men in uniform raising or lowering an American flag; and women in uniform standing at a long table serving baked goods, including cupcakes and donuts, to men in uniform. William H. Mortensen is also shown on a tour of the navy ship Bexar. Images from this visit include a view of the deck with several men in uniform; a uniformed man showing them a bazooka; and the ship at a dock with two other ships in the background, and an ambulance and other automobiles in the foreground.
