DescriptionA woman wearing a blouse, an apron and a long plaid skirt opens the glass door of a wooden cabinet containing books, flasks and bottles. A counter with drawers beneath it is at the right. A mortar and pestle, gas [fixtures], test tubes in holders, a microscope and other apparatus are on the counter. Bottles, some containing chemicals, are on glass shelves above. A sink is at the far right. Machinery may include an autoclave. A framed certificate hangs on the wall. A desk and chair are at the left. A stool is near the counter.
NotesSubject Note: In the 1910s, Cheney Brothers advertised that they were "the oldest and largest successful silk manufacturing company in America and the largest silk manufacturing company in the world." They produced dress silks of all kinds, silks for upholstery and drapery, velvets, cravats, millinery silks, silks for electrical purposes and silk yarns.
