DescriptionUtility poles and a wooden toolbox are in the foreground. A sign on a pole at the left reads: "Street Closed." A sign on the box reads: "The / Hartford Paving / and Construction Co. / Hartford, Conn." Several shovels are nearby. The area is being graded for the approach to the Bulkeley Bridge. Piles of lumber lie near the railroad tracks of the Connecticut Valley Rail Road. A railroad overpass is in the right background. The large building in the right background is a steamboat dock. The stone building in the left background is the back of E. Gross & Co. To its left are the backs of other frame and brick buildings on Ferry Street. Smoke rises from a chimney.
