DescriptionGroup of men and women in costume pose in front of a clapboard building with louvered shutters. A low fence of iron bars between granite posts is in the foreground. Some of the people wear caps, hats or bonnets. One woman wears a pinafore. Two women wear aprons. One wears a quilted petticoat as a skirt. One woman wears eyeglasses. One woman holds a basket. A man at far right is dressed as a Native American. Another man has a false beard. Inscribed on back: "Jennie P. Allyn / East Windsor Dec. 21st 1888." Another copy of the photograph is inscribed: "Mrs. Jarley's Wax Works."
NotesSubject Note: Mrs. Jarley was a character in Charles Dickens's novel The Old Curiosity Shop, where she appeared as the proprietor of a museum with waxworks representing famous figures from English history. Herbert Wells was an amateur photographer who took many photographs of his family and friends.
