DescriptionPhotographs documenting the later career of Ella G. Brown. 2002.102.4 is a bust-length portrait of a middle-aged African-American woman wearing a wool jacket over a sweater. Her jewelry includes a pearl necklace and earrings. She is smiling. In 2002.102.5, a picture of Ella G. Brown with Mr. and Mrs. James J. Machobane of Basutoland, the women wear floral corsages and hold plaques. Ella G. Brown wears a mink stole and hat and leather gloves. An elderly woman wears eyeglasses. Mr. and Mrs. Machobane wear African robes. 2002.102.6 shows Ella G. Brown in the travel agency in the Sage-Allen department store on Main Street, Hartford. She is accompanied by other men and women, some of whom are African Americans. A large map of the world is on the wall. Signs read: "TWA" "Sage-Allen / TRAVEL CENTER". A poster reads: "Catch a / Northeast / Yellowbird / Miami". Papers and travel brochures are on a counter. Sprinklers are visible in the ceiling. 2002.102.7 depicts the travel agency in the Sage-Allen department store in West Farms Mall. Desks, chairs, typewriters, telephones, filing cabinets, and potted plants are in the office, which appears to occupy a corner of the store. Signs and posters read: "Sage-Allen / TRAVEL CENTRE [sic]" "Bermuda" "Holland America / Cruises" "TRAVEL / TRAVEL / TRAVEL / TRAVEL / TRAVEL..." Flowers in milk glass vases are in various locations. Framed pictures and what appear to be small applicances are in the background.
NotesSubject Note: Ella G. Brown was Hartford's first African American police officer and a leader in the African American community. Following her retirement from the police force, she founded the World Travel Agency, which later became part of Sage-Allen.
