DescriptionFive-story bank building surmounted by a sculpture of a phoenix. Sculptured lions are on the sidewalk on either side of the building. Relief panels are between the windows. Awnings are above some windows. Signs on the bank building read: "Incorporated / A.D. 1814" "Phoenix Bank Building" "New England / Mutual / Life Insurance Co." "1814 / 1905" "American National Bank." Another bank building is immediately to the left. Its sign reads: "[1849 State B]ank 1908." The commercial building on the right has signs that read: "Law Office" "The Hatch & North / Coal Co." "Teas & Coffees" "United Cigar." Merchandise is displayed in the shop windows. Men and boys stand and walk on the sidewalk. A policeman in uniform is talking to a newsboy wearing a cap and knickers at the left. Trolley wires cross above the street. A street light hangs from a utility pole.
NotesSubject Note: The offices of the Hatch & North Coal Co. were located at 811 Main Street. Their yards were at 56 Commerce Street and 125 Potter Street.The State Bank was located at 795 Main Street, next to the Phoenix Bank Building.The United Cigar Stores Co. was at 815 Main Street. Samuel Wachner was the manager.
