DescriptionTwo women wearing telephone headsets are at the right. A telephone switchboard is at the left. Slips of paper are in pigeonholes at the right of the switchboard. A slip with the weather forecast is posted on a message board above. Other notes are attached with thumbtacks. Notices read: "The voice with / the smile wins" "Number please" "Operators shall not listen / unnecessarily to messages, and / are forbidden to divulge any / information incidentally ob-/tained. / The attention of operators / is called to the fact that the / law makes it an offense punish-/able by a fine or imprison-/ment to violate the secrecy / of telephone communication / (signed) C.S.
