DescriptionView of the west side of Main Street. Commercial buildings with awnings are in the foreground. The Gothic spire of Christ Church is in the right background. Signs read: "Wise, Smith & Co." "Roberts / Building / A.D. 1866 [or 1888]" "Opera House" L.E. Schall & Co." "Larned B. Hatch" "Apothecary" "Soda." Men are at work on ladders and scaffolding and the brownstone theater building appears to be undergoing demolition. Women in long skirts and hats are crossing the street near trolley tracks. A horse-drawn delivery wagon is in the background. Men are walking on the sidewalk at the left.
NotesSubject Note: Ernest Schall & Co. was located in the Miller Building, 941 Main Street. Wise, Smith & Co. was a department store at 915-939 Main Street. The partners in 1910 were Isidore Wise, Solomon Youngman and Solomon Wohl. According to Hartford Jews, a book by Rabbi Morris Silverman, published in 1970, Isidore Wise (1866-1931) was the "dean of Hartford merchants." Solomon Youngman (1864-1933) is also listed in Hartford Jews.
