DescriptionShop window displaying multiple copies of The Lure of Gold by William B. Goodwin. The display also features armor, weapons, possibly a pike and a halberd, and other artifacts labeled as follows: "Georgia Deeds / with great seal / of George III" "Spanish Buff Coat / Steel Breastplate / during time of Columbus" "Spanish / Jewel Chest / used in late 1500" "The Story of the New World / Printed in 1593" "Spanish Coins, Austrian Gun / Pieces of Eight" "Model / Columbus flagship / Santa M[aria]." A poster advertises "Gardens / Open to the Public / Tues May 14th Wed 15th / In case of rain gardens will be open the next day / Houses and gardens in Hartford / West Hartford and Farmington. / Tickets $1.50 before May 9. Thereafter $2. Benefit Hartford Art School." A sign stenciled on the window reads: "Witkower's /Lending Library." The interior of the store, with electric lights, a tin [?] ceiling and shelves of books, is visible through the window.
NotesSubject Note: The bookstore at 77 Asylum Street was established in 1835. It was known as Witkower's from 1928-1960 under the proprietorship of Israel Witkower. Israel Witkower (1889-1968) was born in Vienna, Austria. He came to Hartford as a child. He was proprietor of Witkower's bookstore from 1928 to 1960. He appears in Hartford Jews, 1659-1970.
