DescriptionSeven men and a dog stand in front of a brick commercial building. Some of the men have beards or mustaches. One man wears overalls. All wear hats. Letterpress text beneath the image reads: "Pomroy's [sic] New Building / Capitol City Carriage and Harness Repository. / Harness of Every Description and Price. / Business, Express, Farm and Truck Wagons Constantly on Hand. / Horses received from Vermont and the West. On hand at all times, good Driving Horses suitable for all work. / All horses sold warranted as represented, or money refunded. Close to Union Depot, Hartford, Conn. Geo. W. Pomroy Prop'r." Signs on the building read in part: "Business / and / Farm / Wagons / Heavy and Light / Bob Sleds / Portland / and / Swell / Bodyt Sleighs." "The Celebrated / Runabout / Wagon / One & Two / Seated / sold Here" "Blankets, / Whips / Robes / etc." "Agent for Columbus buggy Co." "Agent for Cortland Wagon Co." A stuffed horse is hitched to a carriage on the sidewalk in front of the building. Horse collars and horse blankets are also on display. Snow is on the ground. A picket fence and a fire hydrant are on the right. Utility poles and wires line the street.
NotesSubject Note: George W. Pomeroy established the Capitol City Carriage and Harness Repository ca. 1895 at 291-303 Allyn Street. The business was sold to Messrs. Tuttle and Mather in 1898.
