DescriptionElevated view of commercial buildings along Main Street. At far left is G. Fox & Co. Beside it, the Richardsonian Romanesque brownstone building is the Cheney block, housing Brown, Thomson & Co. The next building has a clock tower. The next has a large sign on the roof that reads "Sage-Allen," followed by "Henry Kohn / & Sons / Jewelers" and a second "Sage-Allen & Co." building. Stores on the opposite side of Kinsley Street have signs that read: "Candy - Soda" "Ladies / and Gentlemens / Tailor / Dry-cleaning / Remodeling" and "Blumenthals." A sign on the opposite side of Main Street reads "Steigers / Hartford." Some buildings have awnings. Water towers on the roofs have signs "Sage Allen / & Co." "Brown / Thomson / & Co." Boats are on the Connecticut River in the background. The Bulkeley Bridge and a railroad bridge are visible.
NotesSubject Note: G. Fox & Co., "New England's most modern department store," was located at 960-980 Main Street. Brown, Thomason & Co., "Connecticut's biggest department store," was located at 920-942 Main Street. Sage, Allen & Co., a large department store, was located at 880-900 Main Street. Steigers, "a store of specialty shops," was located at 873-891 Main Street. Henry Kohn & Sons, Inc., diamond merchants and jewelers, were at 890 Main Street.
