DescriptionA man stands beside a Corinthian pilaster framing the doorway of a masonry [?] commercial building. The sign overhead reads: "4 - B.R. Abbe Banker - 4." Stenciled on the windows are signs "B.R. Abbe / Banker" "Investment Securities" "Kansas / Farm / Loans." At the left and right, iron railings frame stairways leading to a basement. The storefront at the right has signs that read: "Unit[ed Line] / Tele[graph" "The Commercial C[able Company} / Mackay Benn... / Two Direct Routes / United L[ine} / Telegraph." A sign in the window reads: "Money transferred / by / telegraph."
NotesSubject Note: According to a note on the back, Dr. Burr Reeve Abbe was born in Litchfield in 1830 and died in 1897. He received his M.D. from Yale in 1854. The man standing in front of the building is identified as Thomas Abbe, B.R. Abbe's son. According to an inscription on the back, the photograph dates to "ca. 1880-85." However, The United Line Telegraph and Commercial Cable Company were only at this address from 1886-1889.
