DescriptionA policeman in uniform stands in front of a four-story brick commercial building with a sign that reads: "Hoffman Wall Paper Co." The shop window on the left contains wallpaper. The window on the right holds cans of paint. Other signs read: "Curtain rods / Cut to order/ Ready made" "Window Shades" A billboard on the roof reads: "The Hoffman Wall Paper Co. / Pratt & Lambert Varnishes Enamels / E.I. Dupont De Nemours Paints." A small sign above the billboard reads: "Thos. Cusack Co." Electric lights protrude above the billboard. The alley on the left with a carriage in it is Sigourney Place. The brick building at the left has a sign that reads: "Sigourney House." A fire escape is on the side of building. The building at right has a sign that reads: "For Sale / 34 ft. front by / 74 ft. deep / Apply / to / S.C. Doty / 80 Sate Street." A street light stands at the edge of the sidewalk. Several manhole covers are in the paved street.
NotesSubject Note: Abraham Hoffman was born in Russia to Jewish parents. He immigrated to Hartford in 1898 and established his wallpaper firm in 1903. Hoffman Wall Paper Co. at 1136 Main Street sold wallpaper, paint and artists supplies and offered services in house painting and decorating. Mrs. Vellvenery S. Webb was the proprietor of Sigourney House, a hotel at 1150 Main Street.
