DescriptionView of commercial buildings on Asylum Street. Trolley tracks are in the street and snow is on the ground. The two-story building in the center has signs that read: "Ladies and Gentlemans / Dining and Lunch Room: "[Popular] Restaurant" "Steaks Chops and Oysters." A sign in the shop window reads: "Regular / Dinner / 25 cents." Signs on the building at the right read: "Josh & Abbato / Shoe [?] Parlor / Hats Cleaned and Pressed / Derby Hats 5 and 10 Cents" and "Wholesale Wines / The Lathrop Co." An advertising sign on the side of the building reads in part: "Buy shoes bearing / Boot and Shoe / Workers Union / Union [sic] stamp." Used furniture is displayed for sale on the sidewalk in the alley beside the lunchroom. The large brick building with fire escapes at far left appears to be a residential building, perhaps an apartment house. A smokestack is in the background. A horse-drawn vehicle is at the far right.
NotesSubject Note: Michael Josh and Michael Abbato were bootblacks at 322 Asylum Street. Hayden R. Lathrop was the proprietor of the Lathrop Co., dealing in wines, fancy groceries and cigars, at 308-314 Asylum Street. The Popular Restaurant and Josh & Abbato do not appear in the 1912 Hartford city directory. Mrs. Eliza Mather was the proprietor of the Popular Restaurant, located at 326 Asylum Street. The photograph was published in the Hartford Courant on March 28, 1912, accompanying an article entitled "Preparing for the Hotel Bond / Asylum Street Buildings to be Razed."
