A sign on the roof reads: "Brainard House." A sign over the front door reads: "Ladies / Entrance." A striped pole at the corner of the building and two smaller striped poles on the porch indicate the presence of a barbershop. Men and women pose on the first and second story porches. Two men and some women wear aprons. There is a cigar store Indian on the porch at the right. Several horse-drawn carriages are in the street. The vehicle at the far left appears to be a stagecoach. The vehicle at the far left appears to be a stagecoach. The vehicle beside it, driven by an elderly bearded man, appears to be a cab. Several small newsboys, most of them barefoot, hold newspapers. Brick commercial buildings are immediately to the left and right of the hotel. A very large poster on the side of the left building reads: "The Great Wide [?] West [?]."
