DescriptionCranes are being used to lower a sculpture from the facade of a granite Second Empire style commercial building with many columns, pediments and entablatures. Additional sculptue remains in place. The upper part of the building is surrounded by scaffolding. Men and women are on the sidewalks and crossing the streets. An electric trolley car, horse-drawn carriages and wagons and men on bicycles are on Main Street. Signs on the adjoining building read: "Hartford County Mutual Fire Insurance Co." "Dime Savings Bank" "Safe Deposit Boxes."
NotesSubject Note: The Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company building was designed by Bryant & Rogers in 1869. In 1901, the building was renovated and the sculptural groups were removed from the pediment and facade. In 1926, Connecticut Mutual moved to 140 Garden Street, and the Main Street building was occupied by the Hartford National Bank and Trust Co. It was razed in 1965.
