DescriptionWorkmen at construction site. Walls of brick and stone rise from a dirt foundation. Wooden beams for the first story floor are in place. Cranes are being used to hoist construction materials. Some men wear overalls or aprons. Bricklayers, one holding a trowel, are in the right background. Wheelbarrows, buckets and ropes are also visible. The brick wall of the adjoining building at the left shows the profile of an earlier building on the site. The Wadsworth stable, houses and other outbuildings on Prospect Street are in the background.
NotesSubject Note: The Charter Oak Life Insurance Company was located at 240 Main Street. The company failed in 1878. The building was later occupied by the Aetna Life Insurance Company.
