DescriptionWoman's dress of soft, drapey, cream-colored silk, consisting of a bodice (a) and skirt (b). The bodice has a wide V neckline with a narrow fill-in above the silk of ruched tulle. The silk edge of the neckline is trimmed with chemical lace. The silk dress fabric is draped across the bodice and gathered up at the center front towards the neckline. The cotton chemical lace is draped below the bust and around to the back, where is continues up the center back opening. The V-shaped front waistline is also draped with the silk. The elbow-length sleeves are full at the shoulderline and gathered at the arm opening into a decorative cuff of gathered self-fabric. The openings are trimmed with a triple layer of machine-made bobbin-type lace. The top of the sleeves are decorated with narrow silk ribbon which has been gathered and laid out in a bow design, with chemical lace medallions above and below. The dress fabric is gathered vertically across the back, between the neckline and waist treatment, where the fabric is pleated horizontally below the chemical lace trimming. Extensions of the silk at the waist have rosettes of ribbon at the ends, which hook across the center back opening on each side. The center back opening fastens with hooks and eyes. The bodice is lined with fine white cotton. The seams, darts, and opening edges are boned. A twill-woven silk ribbon petersham hooks around the waist to ease strain on the seams.
The skirt is flared at the bottom and has a slight train. It is unlined, so that it drapes close to the body. The original waistband is missing, and the skirt has been stitched to a manufactured tape for belting. Two rows of bias self-fabric have been stitched around the bottom of the skirt. At about knee-level, the skirt is decorated with a band of chemical lace medallions and narrow silk ribbon, gathered and stitched in a bow pattern. The center back opening extends ten inches and closes with hooks and eyes.
