DescriptionA young man sits in a carved chair in the interior of a room. He has a slight beard. He wears a coat, vest, necktie, shirt, and slippers. He holds a lithograph with the inscribed title "MARRIED" in his left hand. The print depicts a man, woman, and two children. A pair of boots are on the rug beneath the chair. A coal fire burns in the grate of a fireplace at the right. Beside the hearth are a coal bucket, a broken clay pipe, a poker, tongs, and a small wrapped box labeled "ANDERSON / NEW YORK." A pendulum clock beneath a glass dome and two books are on the mantle. A tablecloth, two additional books, and a small brass lamp are on a table beside the fireplace. A framed landscape, probably an oil painting, hangs on the wall, partially hidden by the drapery that serves as a window curtain. The window is dark and it appears to be night.
