DescriptionFormal studio portraits and amateur snapshots of Mary Keller's siblings, the Monteith-Smith family. Photographs of Rebecca Monteith Smith (Monti) include a formal studio portrait of her with her infant daughter, Margaret, a formal studio portrait of her, and two amateur snapshots of her outside, one with her and two dogs and one with her and her husband, A.J. Carlyle, sitting with a dog. There is one formal studio portrait of A.J. Carlyle. There are four photographs of Agnes Monteith Smith, two formal portraits, one is a head shot and one of her sitting in a chair in a parlor, writing in a book. The other two are amateur snapshots of her outside, one in front of a building and one of her sitting with her dog in an open wicker carriage that has two large wheels on the back and one small in the front. There are four photographs of Ethel "Ettie" Fenton who was married to James Robert Earle Monteith Smith. Two are formal studio portraits, one a head shot and one of her sitting on a bench with a parasol and hat. Two are amateur snapshots, one of her on a pier by the ocean and one of her with several others standing by a rock wall on a beach, drinking tea. One photograph is of the Monteith Smith family that includes Walter Chalmers Smith with grandson, George Keller, standing in front of him, Rebecca Monteith Smith (Monti) holding infant nephew Walter Keller, Agnes Monteith Smith, Robert Earl Monteith Smith, Mary Monteith Smith Keller and Hilda Keller. They are standing/sitting outside a house.
NotesSubject note: Rebecca Monteith Smith, daughter of Walter Chalmers Smith and Agnes Monteith, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on May 25, 1862. She married Alexander James Carlyle on July 3, 1895 and they had two children, Margaret Monteith Carlyle born July 13, 1896, and Mary Monteith Carlyle born April 23, 1900. She died in 1941.

Subject note: Alexander James (A.J.) Carlyle, son of Rev. James Edward Carlyle, was born in Bombay, India on July 24, 1861. He was a priest of the Anglican Church and a lecturer of political and economical sciences at the University of Oxford until 1924. He wrote "History of Medieval Political Theory in the West (1903-36) with his brother, Robert Warrand Carlyle. He married Rebecca Monteith Smith on July 3, 1895 and they had two children, Margaret Monteith Carlyle born July 13, 1896, and Mary Monteith Carlyle born April 23, 1900. He died in Oxford on May 27,1943.

Subject note: Agnes Monteith Smith, daughter of Walter Chalmers Smith and Agnes Monteith, was born in Orwell, Kinross, Scotland in 1857. She never married or had children. She moved to Hartford, Connecticut to live with Mary Keller for a while when Mary gave birth to daughter, Hilda.

Subject note: Ethel "Ettie" Fenton was born in London, England in April 1881. She married James Robert Earle Monteith Smith, son of Walter Chalmers Smith and Agnes Monteith, in 1907 and they had one child, Pamela Agnes Martha Monteith Smith in 1912.

Medium note: Platinum prints of Rebecca Monteith Smith and A.J. Carlyle are heavily deteriorated and appear to be platinum based on transfer image of Rebecca onto the back of the photo of A.J. but there is no silver sheen to either image.
